For years, the standard iPhone was more like a compromise. Obviously, if you wanted the best, you had to pay the "Pro" tax. But with the iPhone 17 and now the iPhone 18, the tide is turning. The upcoming base iPhone 18 is about to make the Pro model look like an expensive and luxurious toy rather than something you need.
And this time around, I'm keeping my cash and going for the base model. Here's why.

The iPhone 18 will not be just a minor update, judging by most rumors. It will actually be a powerhouse. The iPhone 18 is said to feature the A20 chip built on TSMC's cutting-edge 2 nm process.

Why does this matter? Well, smaller nanometers mean more transistors packed into the same space. Early reports are suggesting a 15% boost in speed and a massive 30% improvement in power efficiency. In simple terms, this means the base iPhone 18 will run cooler, stay faster under heavy loads, and likely offer the best battery life in a non-Plus or non-Pro model.

The real "Pro" killer is the 12 GB of RAM. As you can imagine, memory is super important in the world of modern smartphones. iOS 27 is reportedly going to get a deep Gemini AI integration, and the iPhone is going to need a lot of memory to process LLMs on-device. The 8 GB in previous models was enough for the basics, but 12 GB is what would help Apple Intelligence become an entirely different experience.

If this rumor is true, it means the iPhone 18 would match the Pro's amount of RAM. Apple would be ensuring complex AI tasks like video editing or the advanced Siri would be handled like a breeze on the phone.
Also, if the chip and memory are basically the same or very near to the Pro, I can't help but ask myself, what exactly are those extra hundreds of dollars getting me?

Obviously, this change isn't happening from the iPhone 18. It actually started with the iPhone 17 and the groundwork it laid by closing the gap to the Pro-branded models. The iPhone 17 finally got the 120 Hz ProMotion refresh rate. For many years, that was a Pro exclusive, and for many people, it was the last Pro-exclusive feature that really mattered in daily use.
The iPhone 17 also increased the starting storage. Smooth scrolling, more storage, and the model suddenly doesn't look like such a big compromise. It became a flagship in its own right.
Why I'm skipping the Pro: value, price, utility
When I look at the rumored iPhone 18 Pro, I see a device that starts to look niche. You need to be a professional videographer needing ProRes log encoding to really require this phone. Or someone who needs a 5x optical telephoto lens daily. For the average consumer, the Pro is starting to lose its Pro-ness, if you ask me.
Price: The iPhone 18 would sit at an ideal spot when it comes to value, even if it gets a slight price hike from memory prices rising.
AI: Basically, both the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro would run the same iOS 27 and Gemini features with the same 12 GB of RAM. The real "intelligence" of both phones is starting to look identical.
Same speed: Both phones are said to run a 2nm chip.
It seems like the iPhone 18 isn't going to be just the compromised, "affordable" option in the series. It would be the smartest buy, potentially. If all we've been hearing about the iPhone 18 ends up being true, I'm skipping the Pro, and I don't think I'll actually miss it.
Some more food for thought: Apple reportedly has a new release strategy for the iPhone 18 models. Rumors claim the Pros are coming in September, and the base iPhone 18 is coming in spring 2027. By delaying the standard model, Cupertino ensures the Pro version gets a few months of attention without being attacked by its own sibling.
It's a delay that practically confirms the base model is now too good to be released alongside the Pro. Let's see if I'm right.
