"The move is likely related to OpenAI’s rumored desktop “superapp” that would simplify its product lineup."On my opinion your assumption is wrong.Which company want to kill an successful application that anyone can have in his pocket for a desktop one. A quick AI search into the matter reveal this:Unsustainable Costs: Generating high-fidelity AI video is incredibly expensive. Reports indicate Sora was costing OpenAI upwards of $15 million per day in computing power. With the company's upcoming IPO, analysts suggest they needed to cut "resource black holes" to prioritize profitability. Strategic Pivot to Robotics (AGI): OpenAI stated that the Sora research team is being folded into its Robotics and AGI Deployment divisions. Instead of a consumer video app, they are using Sora’s "world simulation" capabilities to train physical robots to navigate the real world. The "Disney Deal" Collapse: Just months prior, OpenAI signed a massive $1 billion deal to bring Disney characters to Sora. However, reports suggest the partnership was fraught with difficulty over copyright and brand safety, leading to both parties walking away. Legal & Safety Risks: Sora faced intense pressure regarding deepfakes, misinformation, and copyright infringement. Even with strict guardrails, the potential for misuse (and the resulting lawsuits) made it a significant liability for a company seeking public investment. Competition: Rivals like Google’s Veo and Luma’s Ray became more feature-rich and efficient, while Sora’s user numbers began to drop after its initial viral peak in late 2025.

OpenAI just killed its most controversial app and lost a billion-dollar investment

🙋🏻‍♂️ I’m one that pre-ordered and returned it. The washed out screen, even with privacy display off and all settings, maximized didn’t justify the price. I went with an iPhone 17 pro, but I’m missing android intensely. I may go Pixel 10 XL. Samsung messed up. A good try, just not good enough
