When you close your eyes and think of the late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, what is he wearing? If you see him wearing a black turtleneck with Levi's 501 jeans and New Balance sneakers, you probably have memories of Jobs from the late 1990s when he returned to Apple after his exile. By the time the iMac was unveiled in 1998, Jobs' new look was in place.

Why Steve Jobs ended up wearing turtlenecks, jeans, and sneakers

If you ever watch a video of the unveiling of the iPhone on January 9th, 2007, Jobs was wearing his uniform. As someone who hates wearing suits and ties, I can appreciate Jobs' sartorial decision. He reportedly went with the look after visiting Sony in Japan during the 1980s and noticed that the factory workers all wore identical uniforms. This came about because after the war, Sony had to provide workers with clothes since they couldn't afford to buy any. Jobs wanted the same thing for Apple, but employees turned it down. When Jobs introduced the uniform on stage, Apple employees booed.

Instead, Jobs decided to adopt the turtleneck, jeans, and sneakers look for himself. It capped off the dramatic change in his appearance from the young shaggy-haired executive wearing expensive Italian suits and a bowtie, to the balding older visionary wearing John Lennon-style round glasses.

Back in 2020, we told you about a company called Caviar Royal Gifts that offered a custom version of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. On the Apple logo on the back of 10 iPhone 12 Pro and 10 iPhone 12 Pro Max units, Caviar placed a small fragment of one of Jobs' iconic turtlenecks. Pricing started at an outrageous $6,490 for the black 128GB iPhone 12 Pro. The 512GB iPhone 12 Pro Max in Luxury Gold cost $8,910. Jobs' signature was placed at the bottom of the rear panel on both phones along with Apple's very effective "Think different" advertising slogan that highlighted Jobs' return to Apple.

Caviar has continued to offer custom iPhone models embedded with square fragments of Jobs' turtlenecks and is now offering JOBS, custom versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Both models have the Apple logo on the back containing a small square of the turtleneck that Jobs supposedly wore when unveiling the NeXT computer. A certificate is included that authenticates when Steve wore the turtleneck. However, video discovered by 9to5Mac revealed that Jobs wore a tuxedo at that event. Hmmm.

The design of the rear casing is supposed to bring back nostalgic feelings since it does resemble somewhat the colors used on the back of the OG iPhone. The price of the 256GB iPhone 17 Pro containing the square turtleneck fragment is $9,630. The iPhone 17 Pro Max with 2TB of storage is a whopping $11,560. Both models say 50th Anniversary Edition in honor of the creation of Apple on April 1st, 1976, underneath that is Steve Jobs' signature.

If you're a big Apple or Steve Jobs fan, and you bought some Apple shares during the IPO on December 12, 1980, you might have some leftover millions allowing you to buy one of the few custom iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max units remaining.
