Qualcomm is still the mobile processor market leader, Intel pretty close to MediaTek
With a 64% market share, Qualcomm was the undisputed champion of the SoC market in 2013. MediaTek overtook Intel and gets the silver medal with 12% of the market, while the former is responsible for as much as 8% of all SoCs sold last year. Spreadtrum and Broadcom complement the list of top SoC manufacturers. This information was disclosed by Strategy Analytics, a predictive analysis agency.
The agency also revealed that the baseband processor market has grown by 8.3% to $18.9 billion last year. It is expected that the market will grown even more in 2014 once other manufacturers, such as Marvel, Ericsson, and Nvidia release LTE-enabled SoCs. The increased level of competition will most likely bring LTE-capable baseband processors to even more mid- and low-range devices.
As we told you several weeks ago, Qualcomm posted record financial results for the first fiscal quarter of 2014, which ended in December 2013. The California-based company revealed that it has earned as much as $6.62 billion in revenue and an operating income of $1.26 billion.
