The arrival of the Huawei P20 Pro earlier this year showed the world that cameras were an important part of Huawei’s strategy – it was the first smartphone to feature three rear sensor – and moving into 2019 it seems this will be no different.

According to a new piece of information, the Huawei P30 Pro will be the first smartphone to use Sony’s unannounced IMX607 image sensor. This reportedly features an impressive 38-megapixel resolution and uses a similar approach to the main camera found in the Huawei P20 Pro. However, there are small changes that could make a huge difference.

The camera featured on Huawei’s current flagship relies on a Quad Bayer filter and uses two different exposure lengths – half of the pixels are used for long exposure and the remaining ones are used for short exposure – in order to create a better image overall. Rather than using a Quad Bayer on the new sensor, though, Sony has included a Dual Bayer combined with a new white HDR Coding Array.

This setup allows the range of white pixels to be used for capturing light and detail. Thus, the need for a separate monochrome lens is removed entirely, paving the way for a new wide-angle camera such as the one seen on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Alongside the improved low-light performance, Sony’s unannounced image sensor also looks set to support Quad Pixel Phase Detection Auto Focus for faster and more accurate autofocus, built-in temperature and ambient light sensors, and improved noise reduction.
